"Why do we have pets?"
Depending on the statistic you read now days, you will learn that it is estimated that somewhere between 50 and 70 million dogs, and between 55 and 70 million cats are currently residing as family pets in U.S. homes. That's right, over 40% of all U.S.
households own at least one dog, and 25% of those, own 2 dogs. While it is not surprising that dog ownership is on the rise, but multi pet households are really on the rise. Along with the pet ownership, also increasing is what is known as the "pet market craze". Consumers buying the "best of the best" dog foods, vitamins and supplements, to the cutest toys, the most elaborate beds, the "bling-bling" name brand collar and leash sets, not to mention the sweaters, jackets, costumes, hats, shoes, jewelry, -and oh we can't forget the deluxe strollers designed just for your pooch. The pet industry is growing leaps and bounds, and most of us doting pet lovers are chomping at the bit to keep up with the latest trends.
So why are we so crazed?? Well it certainly isn't new news that hundreds of surveys have concluded that pet owners are generally less stressed and over all healthier, than those not owning pets. (This does not apply to the homes with puppies under the age of
9 months!!) Obviously those really good doggie moms and dads out there that take daily walks with Rover are getting more
exercise sometimes only because "Rover expects it", or "I can't let him down, besides, it's my responsibility to him." But did you know that it
is a proven fact that even simple acts such as talking to and petting your dog or cat relieves daily stress and even
lowers high blood pressure? True. Even state and government funded facilities such as Hospitals, Nursing homes, and Rehab Centers are allowing regular canine visitors, just to help perk up the guests, and boy does it work!
Now, although typically when one is good, more is better, in this case, you have a little more to consider because as those of you
that have multi pet households know, it can sometimes be tricky finding the right fit when adding a pet, especially for the 10% of those doggie households that have 3 or more pets. Just like human siblings, they will likely compete for attention and occasionally get into squabbles, but so many people feel it is "important for Cleo and Caesar to keep each other company while we are at work".
I say, "hats off to those of you out there that have enough love, energy and compassion to take in "just one more".
In conclusion, we have pets because we love them, we love that we can talk to them and no matter what, they will listen. They will
sit, walk, and stay on command. They won't question you when you come home late, (as long as you come home). They will kiss
you even when you have morning breath. Believe it or not, some people report that they have better relationships with their pets
than they do with their spouse or even their grown kids. Well, above all, it is easy to say, we love their unconditional love
and devotion! |
